Gastroenterology is the branch of medicine focused on the digestive system and its disorders. This includes the esophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, and biliary system. Gastroenterologists diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions, such as acid reflux, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), ulcers, inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) like Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, as well as liver diseases and gastrointestinal cancers. They also perform diagnostic procedures like endoscopy and colonoscopy to assess and manage digestive health. Gastroenterology plays a crucial role in ensuring proper digestion, nutrient absorption, and overall well-being.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) – A functional gastrointestinal disorder causing abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, or constipation, without an underlying disease.
Celiac Disease – An autoimmune disorder where ingestion of gluten triggers an immune response damaging the small intestine lining, leading to malabsorption of nutrients.
Crohn’s Disease – A type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) causing inflammation in any part of the gastrointestinal tract, leading to pain, diarrhea, and malnutrition.
Ulcerative Colitis – An inflammatory bowel disease that causes long-lasting inflammation and sores in the colon and rectum, leading to diarrhea and abdominal pain.
Pancreatitis – Inflammation of the pancreas, often caused by gallstones or heavy alcohol use, leading to severe abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting.
Esophageal Varices – Swollen veins in the esophagus, often caused by liver cirrhosis, which can lead to severe bleeding.
Constipation – A common gastrointestinal issue characterized by infrequent, difficult, or painful bowel movements, often accompanied by abdominal discomfort.
Peptic Ulcer Disease – Sores that develop on the lining of the stomach or the duodenum, causing burning stomach pain, bloating, and nausea.
Hepatitis – Inflammation of the liver, commonly caused by viral infections (such as hepatitis A, B, and C), leading to jaundice, fatigue, and abdominal pain.
Gallstones – Hard deposits in the gallbladder that can block bile ducts, causing pain, nausea, and potential infection.
Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) – The accumulation of fat in the liver not related to alcohol consumption, which can lead to inflammation and liver damage.
Lactose Intolerance – The inability to digest lactose, a sugar found in milk and dairy products, causing bloating, diarrhea, and gas.
Diverticulitis – Inflammation or infection of small pouches (diverticula) in the colon, leading to abdominal pain, fever, and changes in bowel habits.
Gastritis – Inflammation of the stomach lining, often caused by infection, alcohol use, or prolonged use of certain medications, resulting in nausea, vomiting, and stomach discomfort.
